This blog will provide at-home troubleshooting steps to try if your hearing aids are not working, sound soft, or are whistling.
My Hearing Aids Have No Sound.
- Look at the piece of the hearing aid that goes into the ear. Is there wax or debris? Wipe off any debris with a dry tissue.
- Change your dome (this is the rubber end piece on the hearing aid).
- Change your wax guard/filter (this is the white piece on the end under the dome).
- Make sure your hearing aid is turned on. For rechargeable hearing aids see manual on/off video.
- If you are not sure if the hearing aid is charged, place the hearing aids in the case and wait until light indication is green to take out. Color indications will alert you to battery status. A red color means no battery life, a yellow color means some battery life, and a green color is fully charged.
- Replace the battery and try a new pack of batteries if needed.
- Consider whether the hearing aid may be damaged. Contact your hearing care professional for further assistance.
Things sound soft/muted/quiet.
- Visually examine the hearing aids. Is there earwax blocking the microphone opening or the sound outlet?
- Change your dome (this is the rubber end piece on the hearing aid).
- Change your wax guard/filter (this is the white piece on the end under the dome).
- Turn your hearing aid on and off by placing it in the charger or opening and closing the battery door.
- Turn up the volume with your remote control, phone, or directly on the hearing aid.
- Try a different program or memory. You may have accidentally switched to a different program that is set differently to your usual program.
- Consider whether your hearing may have changed. Your Audiologist can test your hearing and adjust the settings accordingly.
My Hearing Aids Are Whistling.
- If your hearing aids are whistling while in your ears, reposition them and push them in fully. Improper insertion can cause whistling.
- Turn down the volume. This will stop the whistling until you can see your audiologist.
- See your audiologist to check for excessive ear wax.
